How do you achieve such depth in such close distance with the telephoto lens at f8? The answer is, you can't. When I saw this moment, I quickly two several shots, focusing on one bird at a time. Then I blend the two shots together to get this image.

Camera Nikon D3S
Exposure 0.001 sec (1/1000)
Aperture f/8.0
Focal Length 600 mm
ISO Speed 500

You cannot even shoot the pheasant now, may end up shooting the 3 meter long cobra, 100 feet away, at ISO 2000, i.e., if you have the gut to go there still. Just for info, one of our friends had a close encounter with the cobra yesterday while waiting for the pheasants to appear.

Nice image troy, love the birds, seem so friendly.
My Singapore friends have shown me how to do this long ago, but I just never bother to try, simply because I am too old and lazy to handle photoshop. My staff are damn good at it, seems pretty easy for them to handle even very complex images. When I have time, will ask them to teach me.

Hope your friend is ok.
This is in the wide open with direct sunlight, not in the jungle like Malaysia. Smile
Blending is easier than you think, especially if the birds stay still and you didn't move, just by manually turning the focusing ring on the lens. It was a split second decision and the opportunity presented itself for just a few seconds.

You guys need to plan a trip here to Florida. Get a few friends and I can take a week off next year to go shoot with you guys here. Come around march, you will go home with a lot of images.
